Awang Sariyan is a Malaysian politician, linguist, and academic currently serving as a Senator in the Dewan Negara. Born in Pontian, Johor, he has enjoyed a distinguished career in education and linguistics, having held positions such as Director-General of Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, professor at several major universities, and holder of the Malaysian Government Chair of Malay Studies abroad. Appointed to the Senate by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, he has been an influential voice in the promotion and preservation of the Malay language and literature both domestically and internationally.
