Birgit Hesse is a German politician and jurist who has served as the President of the Landtag of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern since 2019. A member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), she previously held several ministerial positions in the state government, including Minister for Labour, Equality and Social Affairs from 2014 to 2016 and Minister for Education, Science and Culture from 2016 to 2019. Before entering state-level politics, she served as the District Administrator (Landrat) of Nordwestmecklenburg. Hesse began her professional career as a police officer and legal professional, having studied law at the University of Kiel and the University of Amsterdam.
