Daran Ponter is a New Zealand politician currently serving as the Chair of the Greater Wellington Regional Council. Born in Zambia and raised in various countries before settling in New Zealand, he holds degrees in sociology, geography, and public policy. Before his political career, he worked as a regional planner and a public policy adviser, notably contributing to the establishment of the Māori Television Service and negotiating multiple Treaty of Waitangi settlements. First elected to the regional council in 2010, he has held the position of chair since 2019 and was re-elected in 2025.
