Dean Smith is an Australian politician who has served as a Liberal Party member of the Australian Senate representing Western Australia since 2012. Before entering parliament, he worked as a policy adviser to the Premier of Western Australia and as a senior advisor to Prime Minister John Howard. Smith is notable for being the first openly LGBTI member of the Australian Parliament from the Liberal Party and for sponsoring the Marriage Amendment (Definition and Religious Freedoms) Bill 2017, which legalized same-sex marriage in Australia. He has also served as Chief Government Whip in the Senate and maintains an interest in constitutional monarchy and heritage protection policy.
