Douglas M. Smith is an American politician serving as a member of the New York State Assembly for the 5th district since 2018. Born and raised on Long Island, he previously worked as a high school mathematics teacher and as Chief of Staff to his predecessor, Alfred C. Graf. In the Assembly, Smith serves as the Ranking Minority Member of the Education Committee and is an outspoken opponent of Common Core standards. He has also been active in local governance, serving as the Chairman of the Town of Islip Republican Committee.
