Gary VanDeaver is an American politician and retired educator serving as the state representative for the 1st district of the Texas House of Representatives. First elected in 2014, he represents Bowie, Cass, Lamar, Morris, and Red River counties. A conservative Republican, VanDeaver is known for his opposition to school voucher programs and his focus on rural Texas interests. In December 2025, he announced that he would not seek re-election and plans to retire at the end of his current term in January 2027.
