First elected in 2014, he represents Bowie, Cass, Lamar, Morris, and Red River counties. A conservative Republican, VanDeaver is known for his opposition to school voucher programs and his focus on rural Texas interests. In December 2025, he announced that he would not seek re-election and plans to retire at the end of his current term in January 2027.
