Gerhard Karner is an Austrian politician currently serving as the Minister for the Interior of the Republic of Austria. Before his appointment to the federal cabinet in 2021, he held various roles in regional politics, including serving as a member of the Lower Austrian state parliament and as the mayor of Texingtal. A member of the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP), Karner previously worked as a press officer and regional manager for his party. His tenure as Interior Minister has been marked by a focus on combating extremism, terrorism, and illegal migration, as well as addressing cyber-crime. He has also been involved in national political leadership, including serving as a co-leader of the ÖVP's Lower Austrian state list for the 2024 national elections.
