Prior to his national parliamentary career, Njåstad served as the mayor of Austevoll Municipality from 2003 to 2013, becoming Norway's youngest mayor at the age of 23. He is known for his focus on local government, fisheries policy, and the privatization of elderly care services, which he has advocated as a national model.
