He currently serves as a Member of the Assam Legislative Assembly representing the Jorhat constituency, and previously held office as the Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly from 2017 to 2021. Earlier in his political career, he was a member of the Asom Gana Parishad and served as Power Minister from 1996 to 2001.
