James Meager

James Rawiri Meager is a New Zealand politician serving as a Member of Parliament for the Rangitata electorate. Born in Timaru and of Ngāi Tahu descent, he was raised in state housing by a single parent. Before entering politics, he worked as a senior solicitor and political advisor. In January 2025, he was appointed as a Minister outside Cabinet, holding portfolios including Minister for Youth and Minister for the South Island. Meager is known for his maiden speech, which highlighted his background and his belief that no single party holds exclusive ownership over Māori or working-class interests.
