He was first elected to the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from the Kumargram constituency in a 2014 by-election as a member of the Revolutionary Socialist Party, before joining the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2017. Oraon, who holds a Bachelor of Education and has worked as an assistant teacher, was re-elected as an MLA in 2021. Throughout his career, he has been involved in local social movements and has faced various political challenges, including a brief suspension from the Assembly in 2025 and an alleged attack during flood relief efforts later that year.
