María M. Charbonier Laureano

María M. Charbonier Laureano is a Puerto Rican lawyer and politician who served as a member of the Puerto Rico House of Representatives from 2013 to 2020. A member of the New Progressive Party, she also held the position of Secretary General of the party and chaired the House Judiciary Commission. Known for her traditional and conservative views, she drew significant controversy for her opposition to LGBT rights and same-sex marriage. In August 2020, she was arrested by the FBI and subsequently convicted of federal corruption charges, including theft, bribery, and money laundering related to a salary-inflation kickback scheme.
