Michael McDowell is an Irish independent politician and barrister. Active in Irish politics since the 1980s, he has served as a senator in Seanad Éireann for the National University constituency since 2016. A co-founder of the Progressive Democrats, he previously served as a Teachta Dála (TD), Attorney General of Ireland from 1999 to 2002, and Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform from 2002 to 2007. He also briefly served as Tánaiste and party leader in 2007 before returning to his legal career and later resuming politics as an independent.
