Nilsa Cruz-Perez is an American politician currently serving as a member of the New Jersey Senate, representing the 5th Legislative District. Born in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, she served in the United States Army from 1981 to 1987 before entering politics. Cruz-Perez made history as the first Latina woman to serve in the New Jersey General Assembly, where she held office from 1995 to 2010. Since joining the Senate in 2014, she has focused on economic growth, military and veterans' affairs, and animal welfare, notably authoring legislation to prohibit the commercial farming of octopuses.
