Previously, he was a long-serving member of the Landtag of Schleswig-Holstein from 2009 to 2024, where he held positions including Parliamentary Secretary of the FDP faction. A member of the Free Democratic Party (FDP) since 2002, he also served as the state chairman of the FDP in Schleswig-Holstein from 2022 to 2024. Beyond his legislative and municipal career, Kumbartzky has been active in regional civil society, including his role as president of the state traffic safety organization, Landesverkehrswacht Schleswig-Holstein.
