A member of the Democratic Party, she previously served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1991 to 2005 and on the Somerville School Committee from 1976 to 1991. Before entering politics, she worked as a secondary school history teacher and has taught courses in health politics and public policy at the Boston University School of Public Health.
