Thumm joined the Alternative for Germany (AfD) in 2017 and has served as a local councilor since 2009. He was first elected to the state parliament in 2019 and secured re-election in 2024. Within the AfD parliamentary group, he serves as the regional policy spokesperson and deputy chairman of the Committee for Economy, Labor, Energy, and Climate Protection.
