Before her election to the Assembly, she worked as an auditor for the City of New York for 23 years and served as a local Democratic district leader. Tapia holds a master's degree in urban policy and leadership from Hunter College and has been active in social advocacy, including her early leadership in the Unión Democrática de Mujeres.
