A long-standing member of the African National Congress, he has held various ministerial positions, including Minister of Home Affairs from 2019 to 2024 and Minister of Health from 2009 to 2019. During his initial tenure as Health Minister, he was widely recognized for his leadership in expanding South Africa's antiretroviral treatment program for HIV/AIDS and his advocacy for the National Health Insurance initiative.
