Before her election to the Senate in 2024, she served in the Arizona House of Representatives, where she was the ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee. Prior to her political career, Ortiz worked as a multimedia journalist for various news outlets and as a campaign strategist for the ACLU of Arizona. She is a graduate of the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University.
