A member of the Labour and Co-operative Party, he previously served as the Member of Parliament for Leigh from 2001 to 2017, during which time he held several cabinet positions, including Secretary of State for Health and Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. Associated with the soft left of the Labour Party, Burnham is known for his advocacy of social care reform and his implementation of the Bee Network transport system in Greater Manchester.
