A member of the Labour and Co-operative parties, he has been the Member of Parliament for Makerfield since 2026, previously serving as Mayor of Greater Manchester from 2017 to 2026 and as MP for Leigh from 2001 to 2017. He held several senior ministerial posts under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, including Culture Secretary and Health Secretary, and is associated with the soft-left faction of the Labour Party.
