A former trade union representative for Unison, she rose through the Labour Party ranks to serve as Deputy Leader from 2020 to 2025. She held the positions of Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government from 2024 until her resignation in 2025 following a breach of the ministerial code regarding tax affairs.
