A veteran of the Vietnam War, he previously served as a Niagara Falls City Court judge from 2001 to 2015 and worked as an attorney, including roles as an assistant Nassau County district attorney and in-house counsel for his family's business. He was first elected to the State Assembly in 2016 and assumed office in 2017, representing parts of Niagara and Erie counties.
