Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, he earned an associate's degree from Tulsa Community College in 2002. Before entering state politics, Guthrie worked in the construction and real estate industries and served on the Bixby city council, eventually becoming mayor in 2019. He was elected to the state senate in November 2024 after defeating his opponent in the general election.
