A member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he secured his seat in the 2023 Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly election by defeating the incumbent candidate. Pateriya previously served as an MLA for the same constituency representing the Indian National Congress from 1998 to 2003 before switching his political affiliation to the BJP in 2022.
