Charles Schwertner is an American politician and orthopedic surgeon who has served as a member of the Texas State Senate representing the 5th district since 2013. A Republican, he previously served in the Texas House of Representatives from 2011 to 2013 and held the position of president pro tempore of the Texas Senate from 2023 to 2025. Throughout his legislative career, Schwertner has focused on infrastructure and economic policy, notably sponsoring legislation to reform the Texas power grid following the 2021 winter storms and authoring the 2025 law establishing the Texas Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. He currently chairs the Senate Committee on Business and Commerce.
