Dame Chi Onwurah is a British politician and engineer who has served as the Member of Parliament for Newcastle upon Tyne Central and West since 2024, having previously represented Newcastle upon Tyne Central from 2010. A member of the Labour Party, she has held various shadow ministerial roles, including positions focused on science, research, and digital policy. In 2024, she was appointed Chair of the Science, Innovation and Technology Select Committee. Before entering politics, she worked extensively in the telecommunications and engineering sectors, including a role at Ofcom. She is a vocal advocate for gender equality in STEM fields and was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2025 for her political and public service.
