A member of The Centre party, he previously served as a member of the Swiss National Council from 2003 to 2015 and held the presidency of the Christian Democratic People's Party of Switzerland from 2006 to 2016. Before his full-time political career, he worked as an agronomist and served as a deputy director at the Swiss Federal Office for Agriculture.
