Before entering politics, he had a successful eight-season career in the National Football League as a defensive tackle for the Philadelphia Eagles, Indianapolis Colts, and Tennessee Titans, and was a standout college athlete at Florida State University. As a Republican, he has focused on issues such as parental rights in education and athletic regulations, and he holds the distinction of being the first African American Republican State Senator in Florida since the Reconstruction era.
