Elected in the 2023 Alberta general election, he represents the Alberta New Democratic Party. As of June 2024, he serves as the Official Opposition critic for Technology and Innovation. Ellingson is notable for being one of the first openly LGBT members of the Alberta legislature, advocating for the rights and representation of the LGBTQ2S+ community within the province.
