Danica Roem is an American journalist and politician serving as a member of the Virginia Senate since 2024. A member of the Democratic Party, she previously served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 2018 to 2024. Roem made history as the first openly transgender person elected to and serving in a state legislature in the United States, and later became the first openly transgender person elected to a state senate in the Southern United States. Her legislative work has focused on transportation infrastructure, LGBTQ+ rights, and freedom of the press.
