Dilma Rousseff is a Brazilian economist and politician serving as the president of the New Development Bank since March 2023. She previously served as the 36th president of Brazil from 2011 until her impeachment and removal from office in August 2016, becoming the first woman to hold the Brazilian presidency. Her earlier political career includes serving as Minister of Mines and Energy and Chief of Staff in the cabinet of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. During her youth, she participated in left-wing urban guerrilla movements opposing the military dictatorship, for which she was imprisoned and tortured between 1970 and 1972.
