She currently serves as the Minority Leader of the Kansas Senate, a position she has held since 2021. Originally elected as a Republican, Sykes switched her party affiliation to the Democratic Party in 2018. Before entering public office, she worked as a personal chef and served as a PTA president. She holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from Trevecca Nazarene University.
