Prior to his congressional service, Johnson served as a South Dakota Public Utilities Commissioner and as chief of staff to Governor Dennis Daugaard. He also held a position in the private sector at Vantage Point Solutions. Throughout his career, he has focused on agricultural and infrastructure policy, and he has announced his candidacy for Governor of South Dakota in the 2026 election.
