Elke Kahr

Elke Kahr is an Austrian politician who has served as the Mayor of Graz since 2021, becoming the first woman to hold the position and the first communist mayor of an Austrian city. A member of the Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ) since 1983, she previously served as a city councillor and vice mayor, gaining significant popularity for her focus on housing policy and social initiatives, including the donation of a large portion of her salary to those in need. Kahr identifies as a Marxist and advocates for public housing, social welfare, and community-oriented politics. In 2023, she was awarded the World Mayor Prize by the City Mayors Foundation.
