Emile Dechaineux

Emile Frank Verlaine Dechaineux was a distinguished Royal Australian Navy officer who served during World War II. Born in Launceston, Tasmania, he entered the Royal Australian Naval College at age 14 and built a career as a torpedo officer and commander. He gained recognition for his leadership during the evacuation of Dunkirk while commanding HMS Vivacious and later led operations in the Pacific theater. Dechaineux was killed in action in 1944 during a kamikaze attack on the HMAS Australia, becoming one of the first casualties of such tactics.
