A long-time member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he has held various organizational roles, including Vice President of the BJP's Bihar state unit. Before his election to the Lok Sabha in 2019 and his subsequent re-election in 2024, he served as a member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly representing the Benipur constituency. Thakur is an agriculturist and social worker by profession, holding a Ph.D. in Sociology from Lalit Narayan Mithila University.
