Hayato Shimizu is a Japanese politician currently serving his fifth term as the Mayor of Saitama City. Born in Toda, Saitama, he graduated from Nihon University and is an alumnus of the Matsushita Institute of Government and Management. Before his election as mayor in 2009, he served as a member of the Saitama Prefectural Assembly. Throughout his tenure, Shimizu has focused on urban development projects, including the expansion of the Saitama Rapid Railway and the relocation of the Saitama City Hall to the Saitama Shintoshin area. He has also implemented progressive social policies, such as the introduction of a partnership oath system for same-sex couples, and has navigated various challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic and municipal administrative reforms.
