A long-time member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), he previously served as a Member of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2017, where he chaired the CDU/CSU group. Throughout his career, Reul has focused on internal security, police reform, and industrial policy. He returned to the Landtag of North Rhine-Westphalia in 2022, where he continues to represent the Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis II constituency.
