Ifigenia Martínez y Hernández was a prominent Mexican economist, diplomat, and politician who served as the President of the Chamber of Deputies in 2024. A trailblazer in Mexican politics, she was a founding member of the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) and a key figure in the country's transition toward a more pluralistic democracy. Throughout her long career, she held numerous public offices, including serving as a federal deputy and senator, and was widely recognized for her academic contributions to economics at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and Harvard University. She was a staunch advocate for progressive policies and social justice, and in her final public act, she presided over the inauguration of Claudia Sheinbaum as Mexico's first female president in October 2024.
