Born in Dzemul, Yucatán, she began her political career as the municipal president of her hometown in 1998. She has held various legislative and executive roles, including serving as a local deputy, a federal deputy, a senator, and as the first elected female governor of Yucatán from 2007 to 2012. After a long tenure with the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), she joined the Citizens' Movement in 2020 and has since been re-elected to the Chamber of Deputies.
