Born in Burton upon Trent, he studied History and Politics at the University of Nottingham, where he was active in student leadership. Before entering Parliament, he worked in communications for the charity Thera and the Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, while also serving as a union representative for Unison. He gained his parliamentary seat by defeating the incumbent Conservative candidate in 2024.
