A member of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), he previously served as a local councillor for the Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council. Buckley has held various party roles, including DUP spokesman for the economy, business, and energy. He is known for his conservative political stances, including his opposition to abortion clinic safe zones, and has participated in international leadership programs such as the U.S. Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program. In 2024, he was the DUP candidate for the Lagan Valley constituency in the United Kingdom general election.
