Born in Philadelphia, he earned a degree in international studies from Earlham College and a J.D. from the University of Minnesota. Before his election, Hohenstein worked as a lawyer, served on the National Amicus Committee of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, and taught at the Temple University Beasley School of Law, where he established the school's first immigration law clinic.
