Joseph Salter

Joseph Salter was a Canadian businessman and politician who served as the first mayor of Moncton, New Brunswick. Born in 1816, he became a prominent shipbuilder in the Maritime Provinces, operating a successful shipyard at 'The Bend' on the Petitcodiac River. Beyond his political service, Salter was a progressive employer who established one of the region's first libraries for his workers. Following his shipbuilding career, he managed mining operations in Nova Scotia before retiring in 1899. He died in 1901 and is commemorated by the Moncton 100 Monument.
