Karen Bass is an American politician serving as the 43rd mayor of Los Angeles since 2022, becoming the first woman to hold the office. Previously, she served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2011 to 2022, where she chaired the Congressional Black Caucus, and in the California State Assembly from 2004 to 2010, serving as the first African-American woman to lead a state legislative body as speaker. A former physician assistant and community organizer, Bass founded the Community Coalition in South Los Angeles and has focused her career on social welfare, health policy, and criminal justice reform.
