Stender became active in local politics, serving as the chair of the SPD in Flensburg and as the state chair of the Jusos in Schleswig-Holstein from 2021 to 2023. He assumed his seat in the state parliament in April 2024, where he currently serves as the SPD parliamentary group's spokesperson for economy, digital affairs, and sports.
