Koji Matsui is the current Mayor of Kyoto, having assumed office in February 2024. Before his election as mayor, he served as a member of the House of Councillors for two terms and held the position of Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary under the Hatoyama administration. A former bureaucrat at the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, Matsui also spent time as a professor at Keio University. Throughout his political career, he has focused on administrative reform, regional sovereignty, and the modernization of government structures. He is known for his advocacy of policy-based manifestos and has authored several books on Japanese political reform and governance.
