A member of the Labor Party, she currently holds the portfolios of Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories, and Minister for Emergency Management. Before entering federal politics in 2020, McBain served as a councillor and mayor for the Bega Valley Shire. She holds a double degree in Law and Communications from the University of Canberra and previously worked in the private sector, including running a small plumbing business with her husband.
