Before her election to Congress, she served on the Newark Municipal Council from 2018 to 2024, including a tenure as council president. A member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, McIver has advocated for progressive policies, including the abolition of ICE. In 2025, she faced federal indictment for her actions during an oversight visit to a Newark immigration detention facility, charges she has publicly disputed as politically motivated.
